Quit Smoking

Do you actually dislike smoking and everything about it but just can’t seem to stop?

Have you tried desperately to quit for years using methods such as; willpower, gum, patches, Champix or Nicorette, which haven’t worked?

Have you just gone from smoking to vaping because it was the easiest option?

Even with the ghastly pictures on cigarette packets, exorbitant prices of cigarettes compounded with now rising costs of living and the fear of what might happen if you get Covid. Is it still difficult to quit?

Even knowing what you will gain by quitting far outweighs the benefits of smoking, you still can’t stop?

If you quit you will gain:

  • More energy and vitality

  • Respiratory function – breathing easier

  • Improved sense of taste and smell

  • Better skin

  • More confidence

  • Greater life span

  • Control and freedom

  • More money

Compared to the benefits of smoking? (Ask yourself what these actually are)

Why is it still so hard to quit you ask? I must be addicted right? WRONG.

Most smokers continue to smoke for one reason…….

FEAR!

Fear – that you will have to undergo an unknown period of time suffering feelings of deprivation

Fear – those social occasions will not be quite as enjoyable without a cigarette

Fear – that you can’t concentrate or be as confident without the crutch

Fear – that your identity your personality or your character will change

Fear – that you will lose a “helpful friend” that helps you cope with stress

Fear – that quitting will cause you to gain a few kilos

That fear of giving up is actually created by the cigarettes and the culture that goes with it continually brainwashing you and what an effective job they have done.

This fear is largely created and kept in the subconscious mind, the part that runs 90% of our emotions, thoughts and behaviours. The part that wants to stop and is trying to desperately stop is our conscious mind which only controls 10% of our emotions, thoughts and behaviours. So effectively, you are fighting an army of 90 with an army of 10. Difficult right?

People have quit smoking using willpower alone but this is a difficult road, as your army of 10 has to be exceedingly strong. However, if this is the journey you would like to take, here are some tips to help you along the way.

  1. Make a list of the reasons to quit - There are probably a number of them- but have you ever actually written them as a list?

  2. Set a quit date - And stick to it!

  3. Change your brand - One week before your quit date- change your brand of cigarette. You will find that they are not as enjoyable.

  4. Change the hand you use to hold your cigarette - It will feel awkward – but this small change breaks down habits and associations

  5. Change your routine - If you normally smoke after a meal, try to break out of this routine. Try reading a chapter of a book, watch a TV show, or retreat to a part of the house where you wouldn’t normally smoke

  6. Get active - A five-minute walk or stretch produces chemicals in the brain that reduce cravings

  7. Positivity! - Make regular affirmations to yourself several times a day “I am enjoying life as a non-smoker”

  8. De-stress - Become familiar with calming activities (link) that can help you with stress.

However, if you want help, then Hypnotherapy can help alleviate the fear from your subconscious mind, convincing the army of 90 to stand down and help you have your last cigarette ever!

Hypnotherapy can help you with:

  • Finding the underlying reason why you started smoking

  • Motivation to stop smoking and stay stopped

  • Breaking the connections – the triggers to smoking

  • Feeling positive about becoming a non-smoker

If you haven’t been able to quit smoking before, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do it now.

And if you could stop smoking easily and without cravings, why wouldn’t you break out of that habit into a fresher, cleaner, healthier more abundant YOU.
