Children’s Learning and Behaviour

As parents and caregivers, we want the best for our kids. We want them to be happy, healthy, confident, perform at their best and have good self-esteem. Sounds like a simple task, however, in this modern-day society this is easier said than done. Although children aren’t plagued by the deadly diseases of the past, they do, however, have to navigate a world full of toxins, chemicals, additives, non-nutritious food and stress from overscheduled lifestyles, school and social media. Adding to this, are the rising cases of divorce and bullying and you have an overloaded nervous system which often plays out in the form of behavioural and learning issues.

As a preschool teacher, I have seen big changes in children’s behaviour in the last 30 years and it is scary. Add to that the prevalence of spectrum disorders which were about 1 in 100 when I started teaching and are now 1 in 25, plus the rise in allergies, intolerances and sensitivities.

Children’s learning and behavioural issues can be the result of many factors. These can include:

  • Stresses- from school, bullying, parents continually fighting, separating or divorce, overscheduling, the birth of a sibling, moving house.

  • Early childhood trauma- accidents, illness, broken bones, death of a loved one.

  • Experiences in the womb

  • Family DNA

  • Unrealistic expectations

  • Retained primitive and or postural reflexes

  • Brain integration issues

  • Sensory processing issues

  • Toxins

  • Allergies

  • Food intolerances

  • Nutrition

  • Gut health

All these issues can overtax the immature nervous system, affecting learning in many ways and the only way a child’s body can communicate that something is out of balance is through their behaviour.

These behaviours can manifest as;

  • Bedwetting

  • Nail biting

  • Separation anxiety

  • Hitting out or biting

  • Low energy

  • Sleep issues

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Difficulty learning

  • Bullying

  • Low self-confidence and esteem

  • Digestive issues

  • Self-harming

  • And many more

The modalities used to help your child will be dependent on the issue or issues and the age of your child. These include:

  • Kinesiology - Through the use of kinesiology, I can muscle test your child (or if they are too young, I can muscle test you the parent, as you are energetically linked) to find what might be putting your child out of balance and thereby balance these.

  • Hypnotherapy - Depending on the issue and the age of your child, Hypnotherapy also works amazingly. Due to the fact that children have such wonderful imaginations and positive suggestions can be implemented by the use of storytelling.

  • EMDR - EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) or bilateral stimulation works well for one off traumas.

  • Sleep Talk - Through learning “Sleep Talk”, parents can deliver messages of unconditional love to their child, there by inserting a robust sense of self which further enhances the progress made with the other modalities.
