Managing Pain

Pain is our body’s protective mechanism. Similar to a smoke alarm that goes off if there is a fire, pain lets us know that something is not right in order to motivate us to take action to fix it, such as moving our hand away from a hot stove or resting your broken ankle. This is called acute pain and is very helpful for keeping us from doing more damage to our bodies. However, sometimes the smoke alarm continues to go off long after the broken bone or tissue has healed. This is called chronic pain and characteristically, is ongoing pain experienced most days of the week and generally persists 3-6 months beyond the expected healing time of the injury, or illness.

Chronic pain can result from injury, surgery, musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis or other medical conditions such as cancer, endometriosis or migraines. However, in some cases, there may be no apparent physical cause. (Treede et al,2015; Painaustralia 2019)

Taming the Beast

Lorimer why things hurt

1 in 5 Australians aged 45 years and over are living with persistent ongoing pain which can have a huge impact on people’s lives, affecting all aspects such as mobility, work, family, and social and can affect mood and stress levels leading to mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances and fatigue.

Research now shows that pain is 100% of the time produced by the brain. That doesn’t mean that you are making it up or that it is in your mind but that pain receptors in the brain can signal the body to be in pain long after the body tissue has been restored.

Research also suggests that thoughts and emotions can contribute to your pain, and also the way you think about your pain can change the way it feels. Stress levels can also affect your pain as well as your lifestyle.

At 1 body therapies, we can help you find contributing emotions and beliefs that may be keeping you in pain as well as alleviate the stress associated with the pain.
